Truth Today

The fact that I’m working from home on Friday is basically the only thing that’s getting me up and to the office every day so far, considering I was literally up until 4:30 AM this morning.

I finally did get my iPhone 5. It’s so boss.

I saw Man of Steel over the weekend. I really expected to like it, but it was surprisingly terrible.

I have lame truths this morning. Maybe I’ll try this again later.

Old School

From time to time I have a need to be reminded of my past. Sometimes something as innocuous as the rain, or a fleeting emotion will remind me of where I came from. I usually stay far from the past as there are times I’d like to keep buried. But sometimes.. just sometimes, I feel comforted by remnants of what my life was. Occasionally I’ll allow my mind to dwell on memories long forgotten, or I’ll experience feelings that I find myself surprised that I miss.

Today is one of those days. The best way to allow myself to replay thoughts and emotions from childhood is to put my head down, bury myself in work and put on an old school playlist that takes me to places I used to live. Albums that never fail to evoke images of my mother and all feelings associated with that time in my life:

  • Steely Dan - Countdown to Ecstasy
  • Billy Joel - The Stranger
  • Elton John - Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy
  • Jackson Browne - The Pretender
  • Carole King - Tapestry
  • Linda Ronstadt - Heart like a Wheel

There’s others, but these are enough to get me through what is sure to be an introspective day.

Cryptic Truth as of this moment on a Tuesday

It’s getting deeper. More complex. More real.

I’ve been a bit lax when it comes to my health lately. I blame a crazy work schedule. Of course, that’s no excuse when it comes to one’s health, but there you go. Anyway, I hope to get back on track soon.

I have a codeword that must be used daily, or else things will happen. Bad things, I’m assuming.

I just had a fun sized Kit Kat bar. Sweet Mother of Jesus was that thing fucking good.

Revelations this week.

I need to find a huge heating pad.

If you want me to do something, don’t be too polite or afraid to ask. Chances are I want the same thing and will gladly do it.

The Natural Order of Things

I usually go down to the cafeteria to get coffee as soon as I get into the office. Sometimes I also have to pee as soon as I get in. Usually, I’ll stop by the restroom first, then go get coffee.

Because if I do it in reverse and go get coffee first, to the casual observer it looks like I grabbed my coffee to go into an important meeting in the bathroom.

Or worse, to the casual observer who sees me coming out of the bathroom with coffee, it looks like I went to go use the coffee maker that’s apparently in the bathroom.

Either way, it looks ridiculous.

Sunday awaits

Good, uninterrupted sleep. Check.

Sun shining through my window. Check.

Coffee to be brewed. Check.

Fully aware of the fact that the only reason I’m getting out of bed is not for aforementioned reasons, but because I have to pee.

Check.

Friday Five

The insanity that leads up to a new release has finally come to a head. Today I built the final release candidate and am running some sanity checks. It’s a mellow day at work. We’re ordering Chinese and laughing and joking. Nice change of pace from the past few weeks.

It’s a rainy Friday afternoon. Instead of feeling down, I’m almost comforted. The weather seems to fit my relaxed mood. It’s dark out and a bit cool. Good relaxation weather. That’s how I feel today. Strangely relaxed.

Going to a big party tomorrow. It will be a chance to drink and carouse. I’m looking forward to spending the day eating BBQ, drinking beer, and mixing and mingling. James and Amanda will be with me, so more the better. BONUS: Manda can be my DD.

I’m also looking forward to a relaxing evening. I’m thinking sweats, a good movie, and maybe some Tumblr tomfoolery. Actually, that sounds so good I wish it was 5:00 right now.

Tonight’s plans make me Mr. Excitement, huh? come on. You know you want to be right there with me, chilling out on a Friday night. There may even be pizza.

What was your favorite vacation with your family? (Or without :-P) (Ugh. Lame question, I know, but I just wanted to ask ya something :-P)

There are no lame questions, my friend.

Well.. if you ask me “Is it hot enough for ya?!” when it’s 90 degrees out, that’s kind of a lame question.

Which reminds me of a fun vacation! golf vacation in Florida. Golf carts, copious amounts of booze as well as copious amounts of bogeys.

Still, really fun.

So, assuming that everything is like, existing to serve a purpose, what purpose does this empty beer bottle on my desk have?

It serves as a reminder of how precious your life is.

Once it was full, and was ingested as part of a victory celebration. Other times, it was full of the liquid courage you may have needed at that exact moment. It’s contents once soothed a rage inside of you. it was once shared with a love. One time it simply slaked a thirst.

The empty bottle represents moments in your life. Some you may treasure.  some you would like to forget. However the moments made you feel, they were your moments.

Stare at the empty bottle. It’s purpose is to celebrate your life.

A life so richly deserving of celebration.

Summer is...

Having cocktails with a friend in a riverside dive bar. Munching on fried clams, watching the boats go by, catching up with your train buddy and taking in the energy of all the other people happy to be here on a Sunday afternoon.

This is summer.

Is Saturday Six a Thing?

To my horror I found my glasses on the floor this morning, a bit twisted about and with one of the lenses popped out. luckily, my optometrist was open until 12:00 today and he was able to fix them up.

Today I learned I shouldn’t drive while not wearing my glasses.

And… we’re back to this again. Sigh.

I’ve been thinking of my five year plan. I think I may have to revisit it and make some changes. Ha, just kidding. I don’t have a five year plan. But seriously, though. I may have to think about the next three years and what I’ll be doing. This is not easy for a spontaneous, in the moment guy.

I’m seriously considering some beers tonight. However it’s hot, and I just ate a bunch of ice pops. Ice pops don’t go well with beer. It’s like toothpaste and orange juice.

It hit 90 today. Man, I love summer.

SST

Memories that make your heart skip a beat.

Fleeting images of an infectious smile.

Long ago sensations that were once very real.

The warmth that was transferred to your body by arms that once surrounded it.

Laughter that rings in your ears like it was only moments ago.

The eyes that spoke of desire.

The tactile sensations of a touch that is missed like a phantom limb.

The softness of lips that left a mark on yours.

The excitement of memories yet to become reality once more.

The great equalizer

I popped into the the upstate general store for an ice coffee on the way home. As I walked out, I saw a brand new black Lincoln Towncar pull into the far end of the parking lot. An older gentleman stepped out. He was dressed in an expensive suit, and even in the fading sunlight I caught a glimpse of the Rolex on his wrist. He had an air of distinction about him, and the smug look that monied people have had a lifetime to perfect.

He walked away from the store and stepped behind a tree where he proceeded to whip himself out and began to piss all over the base of the tree. Then I realized that even with all his money and sophistication, that he’s not better than me. A lifetime of breeding is no match for a full bladder. I then came to the realization that I had something on him. I’m not rich, but he was doing something that I would never get caught doing. For all of my wild years and skirting the law, I had more class than him.

You see, I pissed behind the other tree, farther away from the highway where nobody would see me.

Rich guys. Who do they think they are?

The Red-headed Stepchildren of the Night

There’s a severe thunderstorm warning until 11:00 PM. It’s not raining yet, but it’s on it’s way.

I like this weather. I’m sitting on my deck, enjoying the cool breeze that precedes the coming onslaught. I’m surrounded by woods, relaxed by the sounds of nature.

There are no sexy sounds of nature. No howling wolves, no light rustling of the bushes made by curious deer, no birds. What I’m engulfed in is a symphony of creepy crawlers. Bullfrogs make loud, guttural bellows. Mosquitoes whisk around my head. Invisible bugs make their presence known by what are no doubt mating calls.

This orchestra plays to a backdrop of dark sky that is lit up by moments of forked lightning, followed by earth shaking thunder. It’s all at once peaceful, exciting and dramatic.

Bugs and frogs may not be as sexy as wolves and owls, but the music they make is just as mysterious. Almost comforting. I’m not what you would call an outdoorsman, but I do appreciate the sights, sounds, and smells of nature. And with that, the rain begins to fall.

Mother Nature is telling me its time to go inside.

You should always listen to Mother.

My body didn’t get the memo apparently, because I’m exhausted. I was late to work and had to battle the headbobs during the status meeting.

Sunday Seven

Work has been insane. I love technology, but it’s a double edged sword. I dig the computers that give me the ability to do my job, but curse the smartphone that gave my boss access to me today. I could change my career, nay, my entire life to live an agrarian lifestyle, free of technology. Or, I could just.. you know. Turn off my phone.

Jon’s home this weekend. I’m always so happy to see him. My pride in and for my son grows every time I see him. With each visit I’m reminded that he’s away learning a trade because he wants to better his life. Homesickness, boredom and drama have not deterred him from his path. I’m just so fucking proud of my son.

One of the fish in my big tank died last night. I immediately had to pull the carcass out because the other fish began to eat the body. Savages. I’m reminded of the line in the movie Arthur (the original, not the remake) where Arthur wonders if fish ever get tired of eating seafood.

I’m a little sad because I miss a friend of mine.

After a lengthy and costly battle, I won a 3D kit from an eBay auction. If you people know anything about me it’s that I love my toys. And this one’s a doozy. Seriously, it’s as good as you’ll see in the theaters. So with my big screen, surround sound, and brand new leather couch, I have my own screening room. You guys wanna come over and hang? I’ll supply food, entertainment and cocktails.

Finding seven things to write about is hard.

This has been a pretty eye opening week. Kinda tough in certain respects. Learned a lot about myself and what makes me happy, and to a respect, how hard I’ll fight for something I love. However I think everything’s gonna work out in the end. I love happy endings, don’t you?

Kindness

It’s amazing how a simple act of kindness can fill my heart with such love.

I’m a simple guy. Grand gestures warm my heart, but its the small things that move me. Simple, inexpensive gifts rather than expensive ones. A quick kiss in public. Love letters.

And small, unexpected random acts of kindness to fill my heart.

De-evolution of the species

We’re getting close to the release date, and everyone is on edge.

Today’s morning status meeting just devolved into a series of shouts, accusations, finger pointing and people abruptly hanging up from the conference bridge.

Friday’s shouldn’t be like this, dammit. Friday is for taking it easy, having pizza, laughing with co-workers and leaving early.

I see a head clearing walk and possibly a smoke in my future today.

Heel, Boy.

As I had mentioned previously, I enjoy taking walks through my neighborhood at night. It’s dark, quiet, and it’s a small development, yet large enough to make you feel like you’ve exercised after you do a few laps.

Last night I took advantage of the evening air and went for a walk. after a while, I was at the farthest point from my house. I was also on the phone with a friend having a rather animated discussion. It was dark, it was far, and my voice is raised. Off in the distance I see a smallish creature coming my way. Since I live in the woods I’m used to seeing woodland creatures, but this one was making a beeline right towards me. As it got closer I mentally prepared myself to defend against a raccoon.

As he got closer I knew. It was no woodland creature. It was my cat, Sullivan. He must have seen me walk off, and when I didn’t return he came looking for me. Touched, I picked him up and gave him a little nuzzle. My phone companion even marveled at his dedication. When I put him down he went to explore on his own, but never wandered too far from me.

Say what you will about the loyalty of dogs and the aloofness of cats, but last night my buddy Sullivan showed me that you don’t have to have an affinity for bone hiding or mailman chasing to be mans best friend.

I actually think I may have two best friends now.
